Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

SANTA CLARA COUNTY MAIN JAIL

Greetings from San Jose.
We have partnered with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for 2 years now to provide excellent access and care to our mentally ill inmates. We provide the full spectrum of psychiatric services, right from when they enter the jail to the day they are released.

The patient population that we take care of greatly overlaps with the one that a psychiatrist encounters at county emergency and inpatient services. Previously, they often ended up with gaps and delays in treatment when they arrived in custody, leading to preventable suffering. One of the really rewarding experiences of our work here has been to see these patients suffer less with the services that we now provide.

Our work here presents us with decision making challenges that we do not encounter at other community treatment facilities as well as state hospitals. A lot of our work is supporting and treating our patients through their time of crisis and this practice enhances our skills as a clinician.

We are located in downtown San Jose and the facility is easily accessible from highways and the airport. During our workday, custody staff provide us with excellent security and working here is probably safer than at community inpatient and emergency units. And finally, our salaries are better than most.

Overall, I feel it is a wonderful opportunity for psychiatrists. I am looking forward to phone calls and emails from interested doctors who would want to know more. We will begin with a conversation about the work here, arrange a tour for prospective candidates and hopefully welcome you to our fold.

Sincerely,
Michael Quach, MD
SCVMC Medical Director
