We are looking for a co-medical director to join as the counterpart to Dr. Gillian Friedman at San Jose Behavioral Health. This is a shared job position, and each co-medical director works Mon-Fri (10 and 16 hr shifts) two weeks of each month (136 scheduled hours/month, or .85 FTE using a 40 hr/week standard). This position is about 75% clinical (carrying an inpatient caseload of 14-17 patients on the weeks scheduled), 25% administrative. There is a medical director stipend (above the TBH full-time hospitalist salary).
San Jose Behavioral Health is an exciting place to work as co-medical director. As the hospital is committed to a philosophy of continuous quality improvement, the independent nature of the facility allows a more dynamic approach to addressing challenging issues and a more rapid rate of change than is seen in larger hospital bureaucracies. There are plans over the next few years to expand the number of inpatient beds at the hospital (currently 80), and to add an IOP program. If you want to have a job where you expertise is valued and you can effect a significant improvement, this is the job for you.
Administrative responsibilities for the co-medical directors include:
-attending brief daily management meetings
-guidance for SJBH physicians RE: hospital policies about clinical care and documentation issues
-acting as liaison between the TBH physicians and the administrative team
-assisting the director of nursing with daily assignment of physician caseloads and division of patient care responsibilities
-cooperation with the administrative team in hospital compliance with CMS and JCAHO standards, and preparing for CMS and JCAHO audits
-helping to resolve hospital insurance and reimbursement obstacles that require actions from the physician team, and helping guide our systemic approach to address these obstacles
-orientation and mentorship for incoming physicians
-consultation for challenging clinical cases
-court appearance for to resolve legal issues concerning patient care (e.g., writ of habeus corpus, conservatorship, appeals of capacity hearings); also guiding other physicians in preparing for legal proceedings
-coordination with the Intake department to ensure efficient and safe hospital admission processes, and review of prospective admits that are unusually challenging
The salary for this position is $325,000 per year plus $10,000 in bonuses and a full benefit package.
